Nepali movies have taken leap and bounce on its technology. Use of world class equipment and advance editing skills with professional color correction touch makes our movies look like an international (yaar Hollywood movie jasto). But what is it that our movie still lacks despite all these technological advancement. We always said "yaar hamro film herdai testo Jhuur Cha story kasto hola"(our film looks bad visually, I don't think it will have a good story) okay we got you quality of movies like Bollywood and Hollywood. But still its not able to leave impact on people? Why is our movie not making better impact? Infect our market is going downward. Let's puts some light on it, which I think are some of the reasons:
1)Format
This one is the toughest problem to fix. In some cases it might not be a problem at all. But I believe this is one of the many big problems. Our format of making movies is similar to Bollywood. If we look world map all industries have their own format of making movies. China has one Korea have one pattern and they are unique on the global map. But our movies are of same format as of Bollywood with less star power. We suffer big time. And if someone tries to try little different it's termed as an art movie. There is no problem with me regarding art movies. I love them, but that keeps certain group of audience away from that movie. I want to quote director of Loot , Nischael here " One present bad phase of Nepali movie. We need one a big commercial successful movie". Once an art movie tag comes in, people will start to filter themself 'not my kind', might be too vague, etc. So what can be done? Not much despite making effort to say our own story. (Highway looks like one)(Acharya looked like one)..
2)Screenplay;
I am not fully talking about story. It's part of it. We want uniqueness on our story. But together we want a well written screenplay. Our screenplay lacks to appeal. Stories of our movies are good (rare but still) but our screenplay suffers lot from jumps. Unnecessary jumps which disconnect people from whole story. Our screenplay lacks to take us deep into the characters. Our screenplays are much of action driven rather than character. And most of the time we suffer trying that. Because you are never with the characters, you don’t know what are they doing on screen and why are they doing what they are doing. Their happiness should make us happy and their sorrow should make us feel bad and sad for him/her. For that we need moment of connection with them. But our screenplay seems to be jumping here and there. Places where it has to be elaborated seems to be squeezed and vice versa. It's part of director to work along side screenwriter to fix this. We need to try to make our screenplay as moving as possible. When it starts a journey it has to be going forward forward and forward. It keeps audience engaged.
3)DIRECTOR;
You are director not a DP. You are not only a DP.
Lately our director seems to be more concern on how their movie looks. It's a big big big part of movie . But its not all. Director should make sure they have good control over all pRe and post production of entire movie. One of the big things comes across as casting. Before finalizing any one, director should have proper understanding of his/ her characters and cast according to it. Not only cast, think how can he/she bring reality on to screen from connecting them self with their real life experience. For that you have to eat sit walk with your cast. That is all meaning of having workshop before shot.
Get a best crew best as you can. All most all points we talk here would be directly related to director. So it will be more broad and clear as we move forward.
4)Cast;
Not only casting director or director our actors should themself make decisions; can they make this character real, can they connect to them self, can they deliver truth and reality . If cannot just don't take it. Don't take the offer to make fool our yourself on big screen. There are three areas on it. Black (I cannot), white (yeah I can), gray ( hm I might I don't know). If you are on gray area talk with your director and see if he can he it out from you and pour all these entity on your character. As much as it’s his/her movie it's your movie too. You are not a puppet of director you are your character and you should hold on to it. Discuss-talk-make communication easier.
5)Good PRoducer
Our producers are mostly limited to just investing money. They should do beyond that. They should have their say from script to casting and editing . You might be thinking it will kill director's creativity . That’s why I said a good producer who know cinema. That really makes it much easier and help to get better market. Alongside producer should have proper marketing strategy how to market movie after its done how much to spend on marketing etc.
